WONA President Daphna Woolfe opened the meeting, introduced the WONA Board, shared general neighborhood updates, and welcomed special guests:
Rosemary Kamei, District 1 City Councilmember
Mario Lopez, from Senator Dave Cortese’s office
Guests from the City of Santa Clara, including Councilmember Kelly Cox
Senator Cortese was scheduled to attend but had to cancel; he is expected to join the January WONA Meeting.
Key updates shared:
Federal level: Policy changes affecting MediCal/Medicare; California may lose federal funding following the “Big Beautiful Bill.”
State legislation: Senator Cortese’s office is sponsoring ~15 proposals, including:
SB 429 – Public wildfire catastrophe model
SB 653 – Native plants and fire prevention
SB 551 – Expands firefighter job time from 9 to 12 months
SB 30 – Closes loopholes in selling high-pollution diesel trains
High-Speed Rail: Projected $113M annual savings identified.
CA Care Court: Facing challenges with participation and court dismissals; proposed expansion to include patients with Bipolar I & II.
Park Completion: Originally scheduled for December 31; Pulte’s delays in removing the sales office have pushed the timeline back. Community Feedback:
Neighbors strongly oppose delays and want Pulte held to the original agreement.
City is exploring interim solutions (e.g., opening the park while the sales office remains).
Parking Issues:
The park is designated a neighborhood park (intended for walk-in access, no parking).
Broader concern: New apartment/townhome developments lack sufficient parking.
Expectation: Park visitors may use nearby street parking. Permit parking is not an option, so this will be an ongoing issue.
Santa Clara neighbors were invited, as WONA shares Stevens Creek Blvd concerns.
The Stevens Creek Corridor Study is complete; DOT will conduct additional focused studies in specific areas to refine proposals.
Current Efforts: Neighbors have rescued and fostered 10 kittens and fixed 5–6 cats in recent months.
Goal: Fix as many cats as possible — especially females — by year’s end to prevent another kitten season.
Challenges: Limited TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) appointments at San Jose Animal Care Center.
Call for Volunteers: Neighbors are encouraged to help with trapping and identifying unfixed cats.
