WONA President Daphna Woolfe and D1 Councilmember Rosemary Kamei kicked off the September 2024 meeting at the Cypress Senior Center with an important announcement. WONA was selected as part of 20 neighborhoods in San Jose for the "Together San Jose" award, which will grant WONA additional funds for the neighborhood. The agenda also included District 1 updates, a brainstorm on how to utilize the new funds, and a roundable discussion on the anticipated parking issues when the new Winchester Orchard park opens in late 2025.
At Hanson & Spar, DOT will be onsite doing a review; signage will be improved.
Trees will be trimmed and some removed at the hammerheads at the end of the streets/openings to the new park.
Daphna explained the problem with the hammerheads is that the signage isn't good and the apps possibly are diverting traffic to the area. When they arrive at the hammerhead, they can't easily turn around and end up turning in someone's driveway or over their lawn.
There is activity on the wall installation at the Pulte development.
Thanks to Bill Shaffer, there is buy-in on 311 report follow-up.
Daphna invited Vanessa from the mayors office who announced that WONA is a recipient of the 'Together San Jose' grant program. This is a prestigious opportunity for WONA to help build community, pride, and safety in our neighborhood. The program will include a grant for additional funds. As part of the announcement, we held a brainstorm to generate ideas on the top needs in our neighborhood.
Chris G talked about The Stevens Creek Corridor Vision study and how a certain group wants to add bus lanes down Stevens Creek. This will add to the congestion and is not needed. Many community members expressed concern.
Katie M highlighted all the Beautify activities happening as a result of the Beautify grant. Upgrades to the neighborhood include a new mural at the Cypress overpass, new light pole banners going up at Cypress & Stevens Creek, and a CalTrans cleanup on Constance expected in Oct.
Dave D opened up the parking discussion with a picture of how the neighborhood will look in the coming years with all the new development.
Chris G showed a WONA map and how the park will impact parking on the streets. He highlighted the issue that the apartment, townhouse and condo developments do not have sufficient parking, and there is a large risk that parking will spill onto WONA streets.
Each table then broke out into a discussion to identify their top parking concerns for their street, and overall neighborhood. The WONA board will review the results and provide next steps at the next WONA Neighborhood meeting.
